Sleep

A practical starting point for understanding sleep patterns, changing what is changeable and knowing when to seek help.

Observe before changing everything

For one or two weeks, note approximate sleep and wake times, naps, caffeine, medication timing and repeated disturbances. This is not about a perfect diary; it creates a clearer picture.

The NHS insomnia guide explains common causes, self-care and when to speak to a GP.

  • Keep wake time reasonably consistent where possible.
  • Notice sensory factors such as light, noise and temperature.
  • Avoid clock-watching if it increases anxiety.
