Guided support route

Benefits and money

Check possible entitlement, choose the relevant claim, describe functional impact and know what to do if a decision appears wrong.

Start with the official benefits and financial support checker or a benefits calculator.

Different benefits assess different things. PIP concerns the effect of a long-term condition or disability on specified daily-living and mobility activities; Universal Credit can include a separate work-capability process.

Citizens Advice also explains benefits that may apply when someone is sick or disabled.

Check benefits and financial support you can get

An official GOV.UK checker that asks a short series of questions and points users towards benefits and other financial support that may help with living costs.

Evidence note

Official GOV.UK tool designed to help people identify possible financial support with living costs based on their circumstances. It acts as a broad starting point rather than a formal eligibility decision and does not include every possible source of financial support. GOV.UK recommends using it alongside more detailed benefit guidance and independent benefits calculators where appropriate.

Benefits calculators

Official GOV.UK guidance linking to free and anonymous benefits calculators that can estimate what benefits someone may be entitled to, how much they could receive and how changes in work or circumstances might affect payments.

Evidence note

Official GOV.UK guidance linking to independent benefits calculators including Policy in Practice, entitledto and Turn2us. The calculators can estimate entitlement to income-related and contribution-based benefits, Universal Credit, Council Tax Reduction and Carer’s Allowance, and can model how starting work, increasing hours or other changes in circumstances may affect benefits. Users need accurate details about household income, savings, existing benefits, housing costs, childcare costs and Council Tax. Results are estimates rather than formal benefit decisions.
